Our local Sunday paper includes a column in the business news section that features brief announcements submitted by local business owners or managers. I used to make kidding comments about a physical therapist here in town who was featured almost monthly, with what seemed to me to be trivial information. "Jane Doe attended a class; Jane Doe spoke at a local meeting, Jane Doe was featured in a book." At the time I thought "so what?"
Well, let me tell you, when I suddenly found myself in need of a physical therapist, there was only one name that came immediately to mind -- Jane Doe! I went straight to the phone book and looked her up. That is how "top-of-mind awareness" works. It's the cheapest form of advertising and may even be the most effective.
This week's 30-Second Marketing Tip provides some excellent guidelines for how to improve your top-of-mind awareness.
TIPS FOR GETTING FREE PRESS COVERAGE
Don't limit yourself to topics related to just your industry. Any topic even remotely connected to your business may be fodder for the media. Here are some ideas: ▪ Daily news events and how they might apply to your business or industry ▪ Surveys, pools, or other articles on your company or industry ▪ Your views on any controversy regarding your business or things that are even remotely connected to your business ▪ What your company is doing to protect the consumer ▪ An Address given on our business or industry ▪ Visit by trade media or association, or tours by other special groups ▪ Honors received by you or an organization you belong to Almost anything can become an excuse to provide the media with a story idea featuring your company, thus FREE publicity.
Here's is my closing piece of advice: read over the list, think outside the box, and go capture some free publicity!
